Virginia is one of the top states in the US when it comes to education, according to a recent WalletHub study. The state ranked seventh nationally, with Massachusetts leading all states in educational achievement and quality of education, and Maryland coming in second. West Virginia, on the other hand, was ranked last among the states. When it comes to public schools, Virginia ranks fourth in the US.
It scored fourth in quality and third in safety. Math test scores in Virginia public schools are among the highest in the country, and the state also has one of the lowest incidence rates of bullying. Furthermore, there are no significant deficiencies when evaluating safety from violence, bullying, and substance use. At the opposite extreme, the five states with the worst public schools are New Mexico, Alaska, Louisiana, Arizona, and West Virginia.
The status quo doesn't work - American students are falling behind when it comes to international comparisons, state and national competence measures, civic literacy rates, or professional preparation. The 22nd edition of the American Education Report Card ranks states based on their performance in policy and elementary and secondary education. Virginia scored 61.79 out of 100 and ranked fourth in overall quality and fourth in safety. It was one of two states that ranked in the top five in both categories, with Massachusetts being the other. New Hampshire is ranked fifth among the best public schools in the United States, ranking fourth in quality and twelfth in safety. Despite its high ranking, a report released by the Virginia Department of Education two months ago found that school closures, lower standards and lack of transparency have contributed to a decline in student performance over the past two years.
